Aesthetics BDEA-E2016 Design LED Lighting Material expressions Nature Student Project

The Avatar Rug is a conceptual idea inspired by the movie Avatar, using light that is activated by pressure sensors, using foil as the conductive material. The vision of our concept was to implement an organic feeling of serenity into an everyday artefact.

In the movie Avatar the ground lights up under the feet of the characters. We wanted to explore the organic effects in an inorganic object to find and add an emotional and magic feeling and experience. To find this mood and experience we wanted to use light as an experimental material and by rethinking a button sensor to an implemented sensor. We used LED’s and made the pressure sensors with foil as the conductive material. The vision of our concept was to implement this feeling of serenity into an everyday artefact and thus into the life of ordinary people. For the prototype, we chose to implement our concept in a rug to show how the concept could work in practice.
